Murillo wins OPE’s Extraordinary First Year Postdoc Award

October 3, 2016

Anarina Murillo, PhD

Anarina Murillo, PhD, Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC), and Office of Energetics, has been honored with the Extraordinary First Year Postdoc Award from the Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE), in recognition of her willingness, dependability, and good spirit in meeting the demands of her new role.

Dr. Murillo joined UAB in May 2016 after receiving her PhD in Applied Mathematics for the Life and Social Sciences from Arizona State University. Since that time, she has impressed nominator David B. Allison, PhD, Director of the NORC and Office of Energetics, with her ability to handle challenging projects that have required her to master unfamiliar statistical techniques and data analysis methods, as well as to become skilled at different types of grant writing and to grasp new material in the biology of obesity. Her enjoyment of learning is evident to research team members even when she is faced with such inevitable challenges as needing to redo calculations, to ask numerous questions, and to discover that scientific assumptions often prove to be incorrect.

Dr. Murillo’s primary research interests are the application of mathematics, statistics, and modeling to address questions in nutrition, epidemiology, and public health. She is particularly interested in studying the interplay of physiological, behavioral, and environmental factors in the etiology of metabolic diseases as well as community-based intervention strategies in vulnerable populations. Her current work focuses on investigating the regulation of body weight and body fat in response to changes in dietary behaviors in animal and human subjects.
