UAB NORC “Creativity is a Decision” contest winners selected

UAB NORC “Creativity is a Decision” contest winners selected – The University of Alabama at Birmingham Nutrition & Obesity Research Center (NORC) hosted a unique competition for submission of the most creative ideas for grant proposals in obesity-related research. The contest was open to Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Faculty & Staff members. The NORC had 19 applicants submit one-page proposals, and seven winners were selected:

Graduate students: Sarah Katherine Sweatt, Nutrition Sciences PhD Graduate Program, and Lee Anne Flagg, Medical Sociology PhD Graduate Program.

Postdoctoral fellows: Xiaolin Zhu, Department of Nutrition Sciences and Andrew Brown, Postdoctoral Trainee, UAB Obesity Training Program and the Office of Energetics.

Faculty & Staff: Barbara Gower, PhD, Department of Nutrition Sciences; Daniel Larry Smith, PhD, Department of Nutrition Sciences; and Kevin Fontaine, PhD, Department of Health Behavior.

The graduate level prize is $1,000, $2,500 for postdoctoral fellows, and $5,000 for faculty and staff winners. In order to collect though, they must each submit their proposal to an extramural sponsoring authority (e.g., NIH, NSF, etc.) by November 5, 2012.

The NORC leadership developed the idea for this “outside-the-box” contest (see: This was the second time it was held, and the NORC hopes to sponsor on an annual basis.
