Flagg named UAB 2015 Outstanding Doctoral Student

Lee Anne FlaggLee Anne Flagg, MA, doctoral candidate and pre-doctoral fellow in the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC), was nominated for the 2015 College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s Award and is the recipient of the 2015 Outstanding Doctoral Student in the Department of Sociology. Her outstanding academic achievement, scholarly activity, leadership, and service to the school and community were recognized at the 40th Annual UAB Honors Convocation held on Friday, April 24th, in the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Ms. Flagg currently assists in survey design and data collection for the Pregnancy and Early Life in the South (PEARLS) Study—under the supervision of Monica Baskin, PhD, associate professor in the Division of Preventive Medicine, and Paula C. Chandler-Laney, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition Sciences—at UAB’s Center for Women’s Reproductive Health, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She also conducted screenings and managed adverse and reportable events for the CROSSROADS Study for Julie L. Locher, PhD, professor in the Departments of Medicine and Health Care Organization and Policy, and Jamy Ard, MD, former medical director of the EatRight Weight Management Services and vice chair for clinical care in the Department of Nutrition Sciences. Ms. Flagg’s primary mentor in the NORC is Dr. Locher.

Ms. Flagg’s research interests in how physical activity before and during pregnancy relate to perinatal outcomes and how to improve exercise adherence among pregnant women is reflected in her PhD dissertation “Exercise Adherence among Pregnant Women: The Roles of Socioeconomic Status, Attitudes towards Prenatal Exercise, and Social Support,” and in such published works as “Neighborhood Disadvantage, Preconception Health Behaviors, and Infant Birthweight: A Preliminary Study” in the International Journal of Contemporary Sociology(co-investigators: Belinda L. Needham, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of Michigan, and Dr. Locher). She has also published a manuscript titled “The Influence of Gender, Age, Education, and Household Size on Meal Preparation and Food Shopping Responsibilities” in Public Health Nutrition(co-investigators: Bisakha Sen, PhD, professor; Meredith L. Kilgore, PhD, professor and chair; and Dr. Locher, in the Department of Health Care Organization and Policy).

She has delivered oral presentations at UAB’s Graduate Student Research Days and the Add Health Users Conference. Ms. Flagg has also made poster presentations at the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting, UAB’s Center for Exercise Medicine Annual Symposium, UAB’s Comprehensive Center for Healthy Aging Annual Symposium, the Obesity & Pregnancy Meeting, UAB’s Diabetes Research Day, and UAB’s Health Disparities Research Symposium. This month she will be giving an oral presentation of her dissertation work at the American College of Sports Medicine’s Annual Meeting in San Diego.
