Gibbs appointed Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization Junior Representative to GSA Publications Committee

August 18, 2015

Katie Gibbs, PhD, postdoctoral scholar in the Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) and Department of Nutrition Sciences, has been named the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization (ESPO) Junior Representative to the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Publications Committee, which “makes recommendations on publications plans and policies, including the management, acquisition, initiation, or discontinuance of publications.” GSA produces such publications as The Gerontologist, The Journals of Gerontology Series A and B, and Public Policy and Aging Report.

For over five decades, ESPO has provided opportunities for students and trainees to be actively involved in the field of gerontology. In the initial year of Dr. Gibbs’s role as Junior Representative—officially beginning on November 1, 2015—she will work in partnership with the Senior Representative to support ESPO interests on the Publications Committee. In her second year of service to GSA, Dr. Gibbs will become Senior Representative and act as mentor to the newly appointed Junior Representative. In addition to participating in regular conference calls, she and the Publications Committee will gather in person at the GSA Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr. Gibbs holds membership in the Biological Sciences Section of the GSA and the American Aging Association. Her research interests include investigating physiological responses to nutrition and the environment using different animal models. She is currently evaluating the effectiveness of healthspan measures in a murine model for predicting lifespan. Additionally, Dr. Gibbs studies how environmental stressors and perceived stress from novel environments affect behavior, energetics, body composition, aging, and potentially lifespan using a murine model.
