UAB alumna Cardel named Chair-Elect for the ASN’s Obesity Research Interest Section

Daniel L. Smith, Jr., PhDMichelle Cardel, PhD, RD—former trainee in UAB’s Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) and Department of Nutrition Sciences working with mentor Professor José Fernández, PhD, and current assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Policy at the University of Florida—has been selected as Chair-Elect for the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Obesity Research Interest Section (RIS). In her new role within the society, Dr. Cardel will assist the Obesity RIS, the largest within the ASN, in its goal to promote scientific exchange among ASN members who “focus on research, teaching, and outreach activities in the area of Obesity,” as well as to encourage mentoring of young investigators interested in the field. She will be working with current Chair Andrew W. Brown, PhD, scientist in the NORC and Office of Energetics, and Immediate Past Chair David B. Allison, PhD, distinguished professor and director of the NORC and Office of Energetics. (UAB alumnus and former NORC mentoree Mark B. Cope, PhD, held the position prior to Dr. Allison.)

Dr. Cardel states, “I am thrilled and honored to have been elected to serve alongside Dr. Allison and Dr. Brown for ASN’s Obesity RIS.”

Her research is focused on understanding the factors that contribute to the development of obesity and in implementing effective prevention and treatment programs for childhood obesity in underserved populations. Dr. Cardel’s specialties include nutrition, obesity, weight management, pediatric obesity, psychosocial factors contributing to obesity, and health disparities.
