She obtained her M.S. from Auburn University in Auburn, AL in Nutrition (Summa Cum Laude), and a B.S. in Health Science with a concentration in Nutrition from Keene State College in Keene, NH (Magna Cum Laude). Makenzie’s long-term research goal is to develop evidence-based interventions to reduce the risk for obesity and improve weight loss success among individuals who are predisposed toward obesity.

Makenzie’s research focus involves examining the role of metabolism and potential interactions with the nutritional environment contributing to obesity. She is currently working with Dr. Timothy Garvey and Dr. Paula Chandler-Laney on a project examining the intergenerational transmission of obesity that was funded by the American Heart Association (AHA). Specifically, this study is designed to elucidate the mechanistic pathways that contribute to obesity among women and children who have a history of obesity during pregnancy, with and without gestational diabetes. Makenzie’s role on this study is to measure diet, body composition, resting energy expenditure and substrate metabolism in women and children.
