Dr. Samantha L. Martin is the first American Heart Association Postdoc for the Health After Pregnancy (Intergenerational Transmission of Obesity in a Cohort of Mother-Child Dyads) study. In 2011, Dr. Martin completed a dual-degree program in Chemistry and Biology from Mississippi Valley State University. In 2018, she completed her Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) with an emphasis in cancer epigenetics. Her dissertation work focused on the preventing colorectal cancer by using dietary phytochemicals to cause epigenetic modifications. Her postdoctoral research is under the mentorship of Dr. Cora E. Lewis, Dr. Paula Chandler-Laney, and Dr. Bertha Hidalgo. In January 2018, Dr. Martin joined the UAB Department of Nutrition and is now focused on identifying physiological and epigenetic mechanisms associated with obesity and cardiometabolic disease in children following intrauterine exposure to gestational diabetes or maternal obesity.
